Build

As far as build goes, the FG720S features a combination of several woods – spruce (Sitka, to be exact), eastern mahogany, and rosewood, which complement each other nicely.

As noted, the top is solid Sitka spruce, which is quite stiff along, as well as across the grain, and relatively lightweight. These two characteristics combined give Sitka the ability to transfer sound at high velocity, making it a popular choice for topwoods.

The top is supported by a non-scalloped quarter-sawn X-bracing and complemented with mahogany sides and back to warm and mellow the bright and clear sound of Sitka.

The nato neck and rosewood fingerboard and bridge make a great combo, with neck being backed (pun not intended) by an adjustable truss rod. The bridge and fretboard are left natural, without lacquer finish.

The SG720S sports a classic dreadnought body, and comes with a tortoise pickguard.Any beginner will be happy with this puppy, as well as many an experienced player on a budget looking to add to his or her collection.

Finish

The SG720S is available in a variety of ultra-thin high-gloss finishes, such as Natural, Black, Cobalt Aqua, Dusk Sun Red, Tobacco Brown and Brown Sunburst, so take your pick.

Action & Feel

The action feels somewhat high on the upper frets, but not too high, even for beginners. You can replace the saddle if it tires your fingers, but make sure you don’t bring it too low and create a buzz.

It doesn’t really feel like a beginners guitar, and this is the precise reason it’s perfect for neophytes; the fretboard is smooth, frets are well-dressed and don’t stick out, so you’ll have no troubles chording on this baby.

SoundThe sound’s overall well-balanced, with bright highs and rich lows. The best thing that could be said about the guitar is that it sounds much better than you might assume looking at the price. It’s more than capable to play with the big dogs and stand its ground.
